After a long day of work, a few proper kneading and massage can make you feel refreshed. That's why many people are buying various massage chairs in malls. Nowadays, there are more types of massage chairs than before, and prices vary widely: imported massage chairs can cost up to 16,000 RMB, while cheaper domestic ones range from 2,000 to 3,000 RMB. Does sitting on a massage chair really achieve the effects of massage? The reporter asked Associate Professor Ding Quanmao of the Massage Department at Guang'anmen Hospital, China Academy of Traditional Chinese Medicine, to answer consumers' questions. Dr. Ding believes that the principle of a massage chair is mechanical rolling force and pressure. Manual massage can unblock meridians, improve blood circulation, maintain balance of yin and yang in the body, so after massage, muscles become relaxed, joints flexible, and one feels energized and free from fatigue, which is important for maintaining health. For healthy individuals, manual massage can enhance the body's natural resistance and provide health benefits. However, mechanical massage from a massage chair differs from manual massage—it has only a few contact points, cannot select or target specific points, nor perform manual massage techniques; it merely imitates human "kneading" and "pinching" movements. Therefore, it can only relieve fatigue and discomfort, offering relaxation, but not therapeutic effects. Moreover, the force is hard to control—too light has little effect, too heavy causes muscle pain. Additionally, some people are not suitable for using massage chairs: first, those with heart disease, hypertension, or osteoporosis. Because massage increases blood circulation, it may trigger illness in patients with heart disease or hypertension. Osteoporosis patients, due to calcium deficiency, have brittle bones, making them prone to fractures if subjected to strong massage. Second, those with broken skin, ulcers, bleeding, tuberculosis, or tumors. Third, those who are extremely hungry, full, drunk, or overly tired. Dr. Ding also pointed out other precautions when using a massage chair: first, stay mentally and physically relaxed. While concentrating, remain calm and avoid tension throughout the body. Second, adjust the massage intensity. Too light won't stimulate effectively; too heavy causes fatigue and may damage the skin. Start with less intensity and gradually increase. Third, control the massage time—ideally 20 minutes per session, best done once in the morning and once before bedtime. Lastly, Dr. Ding said the most important thing when choosing a massage chair is to consider your own constitution and the manufacturer’s product features, selecting based on individual needs.
