Traditional Chinese Hand Bath for Fatigue Relief
In Japan, a health practice called “hand bath” has become popular among photographers. It is said to relieve fatigue and is suitable for white-collar workers. Photographers are often exposed to bright lights for long periods, making their eyes easily tired; their necks and shoulders also get sore from staying in one position for too long. When this happens, they take a break during shooting to do a “hand bath.” The method is simple: fill a basin with hot water, slightly warmer than body temperature, and immerse both hands open for 5–10 minutes. If the water cools down, add more hot water. After the hand bath, eye congestion and shoulder pain significantly improve. Professor Liu Zhanwen from Beijing University of Chinese Medicine explains that according to traditional Chinese medicine theory, a hand bath works by externally stimulating the meridians, thereby treating and relieving bodily ailments. When the hand warms up, blood vessels dilate, improving circulation, and easing tension in muscles and nerves. Compared to foot baths, hand baths are simpler and more convenient—office workers should try them.
