“Lost pillow” (or “dislocated pillow”) is also known as “neck stiffness.” Causes include: 1. Sleeping with a pillow too high or too low, causing neck muscle spasm and fatigue. If sleeping too deeply, turning the body without moving the neck, leaving the neck in an awkward position, resulting in irritation and pain. 2. Exposure to cold drafts at night due to open windows or doors, causing chill and pain. Most cases of neck stiffness last 2–3 days and resolve spontaneously without treatment. However, if you wish to relieve pain quickly and recover sooner, try the following: 1. Cold compress: Most cases of neck stiffness are acute injuries, commonly presenting with localized pain and stiffness. Cold compress is recommended within 48 hours. Wrap small ice cubes in a towel and apply to the affected area for 15–20 minutes, twice daily. For severe cases, apply every hour. 2. Heat compress: Once inflammation and pain subside, switch to heat therapy. Use a warm damp towel, infrared heater, or hot saltwater bottle for dry heat application. 3. Massage: If neck and shoulder pain persists after above measures, try the “separating tendon” massage technique, preferably done by a family member. Have the patient sit upright, expose the neck and shoulders. The therapist stands behind, applies a small amount of Honghua oil or Shujin oil to the painful shoulder, uses the left hand to stabilize the patient’s head, and with the right thumb, gently rub and massage the painful spot, then gently push outward to separate the contracted tender points. Perform 3–6 times daily. Typically, pain in neck and shoulders eases significantly after this technique.
