Mga Reseta sa Katutubong Gamot / Internal Medicine / Other Categories>Last time I was in the U.S. on business, my relative’s child had a cold. I happened to be driving to the supermarket, so I bought some children’s vitamin C supplements to help. But thinking about it, since when did doctors and pharmacists in Taiwan and the U.S. start advising cold sufferers to increase vitamin C intake? I’ve heard it speeds up recovery, and even pharmaceutical companies now claim this benefit on labels. But is there any scientific basis?
Those studying biochemistry know that Linus Pauling, a two-time Nobel laureate from the 1970s, was the pioneer behind vitamin C research. His later work focused heavily on vitamin C’s role in cancer and cold prevention. Unfortunately, he didn’t achieve results comparable to his earlier fame, sparking significant controversy. He himself took high-dose vitamin C—2–4 grams daily—as part of his personal experiments. While lab studies show vitamin C boosts immunity, this doesn’t necessarily mean it works the same way in humans. Though it seems logical, clinical evidence remains lacking.
So, does taking extra vitamin C really fight colds? This question remains uncertain. Numerous overseas clinical reports suggest no difference in cold outcomes whether one takes vitamin C or not. If you choose to take it, 200–500mg per day is sufficient—no need to exceed 500mg or take several grams like Dr. Pauling. In fact, excessive vitamin C may lead to blood acidification and potential kidney stones. Simply drinking plenty of fluids and resting adequately allows your natural immune system to heal you. There’s no need to buy expensive medicines or worry excessively.
