Preventing Whooping Cough in Children in Spring

In spring, children are prone to contracting a special type of cough. Clinical symptoms include paroxysmal spasmodic coughing and a characteristic inspiratory whoop after coughing. In traditional Chinese medicine, this is called "Dun Ke" (Whooping Cough). Children suffer greatly during coughing episodes—coughing dozens of times consecutively, face turning red, tears and runny nose flowing out, only stopping when phlegm is expelled or vomiting occurs. Episodes repeat throughout the day, ranging from several to dozens of times. This illness is hard to cure quickly and may last two to three months, hence the name "Hundred-day Cough." It commonly affects children under three years old, with newborns and infants at risk of developing pneumonia. Without complications, prognosis is generally good, and lasting immunity develops after infection. Some parents mistakenly believe that "whooping cough" lasts exactly 100 days and that treatment is ineffective, leading to passive waiting. However, early treatment and proper care can shorten the course of illness and prevent prolonged symptoms. Conversely, neglecting treatment may lead to facial swelling, grayish complexion, red eyes, nosebleeds, malnutrition, weakened immunity, and secondary complications like pneumonia or encephalitis. Simple herbal remedies for whooping cough include:
(1) Boil 6 grams each of Stemonae Root, Loquat Bark, and Apricot Kernel, add 10 grams of rock sugar, divide into three doses daily;
(2) Boil 10 grams each of Heavenly Shell and Loquat Leaf (remove hairs), add 15 grams of rock sugar, divide into three doses daily. During outbreaks, boil two cloves of garlic, 30 grams of bok choy root, and 60 grams of sugar into a decoction to drink as tea, helpful for prevention. During treatment, maintain good care: keep indoor air fresh, ensure ample sunlight, avoid smoking indoors, minimize unnecessary stimuli, and provide easily digestible, nutrient-rich foods. Utensils used by patients should be exposed to sunlight or boiled for disinfection. Treat children kindly—tell stories or play games to distract them and reduce coughing episodes. Whooping cough is contagious, with highest infectivity in the first two weeks of illness; isolation of infected children is essential.
