You Gui Wan 【Source】Volume 51 of "Jing Yue Quan Shu." 【Composition】250 g of prepared Rehmannia glutinosa (large), 120 g of Chinese yam (stir-fried), 90 g of Cornus officinalis (lightly stir-fried), 120 g of Lycium barbarum (lightly stir-fried), 120 g of deer antler gelatin (charred), 120 g of Cuscuta chinensis (processed), 120 g of Eucommia ulmoides (sautéed with ginger juice), 90 g of Angelica sinensis (do not use if loose stools), 60 g of cinnamon bark (can gradually increase to 120 g), 60 g of processed Aconite root (can gradually increase to 150–160 g) 【Usage】Grind into fine powder. First steam and mash the Rehmannia into paste, then mix with refined honey to form pills the size of an egg. Take 2–3 pills at a time, swallowed with boiling white water. 【Function】Warmly tonify kidney yang. 【Indications】Deficiency of kidney yang, weak life gate fire, fatigue, weak breath, cold aversion, cold limbs, impotence, seminal emission, infertility, soreness and weakness in waist and knees, involuntary urination, joint pain, generalized edema; or failure of fire to generate earth, leading to spleen-stomach deficiency-cold, poor appetite, nausea, bloating, regurgitation, dysphagia, abdominal pain around the navel, loose stools, frequent diarrhea. 【Additions/Modifications】For deficiency of yang and qi, add ginseng as appropriate; for yang deficiency with sperm leakage or leukorrhea with loose stools, add wine-fried Psoralea corylifolia; for chronic diarrhea or renal diarrhea uncontrolled, add Schisandra berries and nutmeg; for spleen-stomach deficiency-cold with reduced food intake and difficulty digesting, or nausea and acid regurgitation, add dried ginger; for persistent abdominal pain, add Evodia rutaecarpa; for soreness and weakness in waist and knees, add walnut meat; for yin deficiency with impotence, add Morinda root and Cistanche, or add yellow dog testicle. 【Discussion】This formula is derived by modification from the Kidney Qi Pill in "Golden Chamber," treating conditions due to kidney yang deficiency and weak life gate fire, or fire failing to generate earth. Besides cinnamon and aconite, this formula adds deer antler gelatin, Cuscuta, and Eucommia to enhance warming and tonifying effects on the kidney. It also includes Angelica and Lycium to complement Rehmannia, Chinese yam, and Cornus for enhanced nourishing yin and blood benefits. The inclusion of yin-nourishing herbs reflects the principle in "Jing Yue Quan Shu": "To properly tonify yang, one must seek yang within yin." |
