Ang TCM ay may magandang epekto sa pagtrato ng constipation, ngunit dapat sundin ang principle ng differentiation of syndromes at treatment. ① Insufficient body fluids: Ang pasyente ay may blood deficiency after childbirth, yin deficiency sa matanda, excessive sweating, intestinal heat, frequent urination na nagdulot ng fluid loss. O ang pagkain ng rich, greasy, spicy foods ay nagdulot ng heat at fluid depletion. Manifestations: Hard, blocky stools, brown color, defecation every 3–5 days, small volume, foul smell, kasama ang dizziness, fatigue, irritability, poor digestion, red tongue with little saliva, fine and rapid pulse. Treatment: Nourish yin, replenish blood, increase fluids, moisten intestines. Formula: Zengye Chengqi Tang combined with Siwu Tang, adjusted. ② Liver Qi stagnation type: Dahil sa emotional distress, excessive sorrow, worry, sedentary lifestyle, irregular bowel habits, low intake, overly refined diet, na nagdulot ng Qi stagnation at liver Qi stagnation, na nagdudulot ng failure in bowel movement. Karaniwan sa mga komplikasyon tulad ng hemorrhoids, fistulas, fissures. Manifestations: Stools are not dry, but difficult to pass, abdominal bloating, sensation of heaviness in anus, yet no stool passed, or incomplete evacuation, or feeling of heaviness even after passing; accompanied by fullness in chest and ribs, dizziness, lethargy, belching; thin greasy coating, wiry and fine pulse. Treatment: Regulate liver Qi, promote clarity and descend turbidity. Formula: Sini San with added apricot kernel, cardamom seed, and radish seed. ③ Internal heat and dryness: Dulot ng external wind-heat or dryness, o excessive intake of spicy and greasy food, na nagdulot ng intestinal heat, drying out body fluids; o lung heat that spreads to the intestine, causing hard stools. Manifestations: Hard, dry stools, abdominal distension and pain, mouth sores, flushed face, fever, short and red urine, restlessness, thirst; yellow and dry tongue coating, slippery and rapid pulse. Treatment: Clear heat, purge fire, break Qi stagnation, promote bowel movement. Formula: Xiaochengqi Tang, adjusted.
