Pi Pa clears heat, transforms phlegm, descends qi, and stops cough. Together, they effectively clear heat, moisten dryness, and relieve cough. Pharmacological studies show that the seeds of Pi Pa contain amygdalin and fatty oil, along with small amounts of cetyl alcohol and cetyl palmitate. Amygdalin can release hydrogen cyanide, which has cough-suppressing and analgesic effects. When hydrolyzed, it produces benzoic acid, which inhibits yeast in the digestive tract and prevents fermentation.
