Beware of Intrahepatic Cholestasis of Pregnancy
In China, intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy is a common condition during pregnancy. How much do expectant mothers truly understand about this disease? Actually, due to lack of professional knowledge, many pregnant women have misconceptions. Misconception One: Itching during pregnancy is only a skin disease. Many pregnant women experience itching during mid-to-late pregnancy, even early pregnancy, typically starting on palms and soles, gradually spreading to lower legs, thighs, upper limbs, back, chest, and abdomen. Besides scratch marks, skin lesions may appear, with varying degrees of itchiness—from mild occasional itching to severe generalized itching, some so intense they disrupt sleep. Some pregnant women and their families mistakenly believe it’s just a regular skin condition. In reality, this could indicate intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy. Its main clinical feature is itching, severe cases may show jaundice, and some patients feel fatigued, diarrhea, or bloating. When these warning signs appear, seek medical attention promptly to prevent further progression. Misconception Two: Intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy has no adverse effects on mother and baby. Some pregnant women ignore this condition because symptoms are mild, thinking it’s harmless and will disappear after childbirth. Indeed, symptoms like itching and jaundice naturally resolve after delivery, and liver function returns to normal. However, this condition significantly affects the fetus, potentially causing preterm birth or stillbirth. Reports indicate that many previously unexplained preterm births and stillbirths were actually caused by this condition. Therefore, once diagnosed with intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy, closely monitor fetal health, count fetal movements frequently, have family members listen to fetal heart sounds, and contact the doctor immediately upon noticing abnormalities. Follow medical advice to take both traditional Chinese and Western medicines to ensure the baby safely survives the critical period.
