Disease Description Bone and joint tuberculosis is a secondary condition, part of systemic disease; 95% originate from lungs and pleura, about 5% from digestive tract and lymphatic system. Characteristics: spinal involvement is most common, especially lumbar vertebrae due to heavy load and frequent movement. Higher incidence in younger age groups, particularly children under 10 years old. Onset is gradual, early symptoms are minimal—sometimes with afternoon fever, night sweats, fatigue. However, when simple tuberculosis suddenly ruptures into synovial membrane or bone cavity forming septic arthritis, clinical signs resemble acute arthritis. Traditional Chinese medicine refers to this condition as “bone consumption,” which forms cold abscesses that may spread widely. After rupture, wounds heal slowly, discharging thin pus resembling phlegm. Abscesses at the waist are called “Shen-shu Cold Phlegm”; those at the hip are “Fu-gu Phlegm”; knee abscesses are “Crane Knee Phlegm”; ankle abscesses are “Piercing Ankle Phlegm.” 1.
