Formula and Functions of Bu Yang Huan Wu Tang

Bu Yang Huan Wu Tang – First Modification: Based on Bu Yang Huan Wu Tang, the dosage in "Yilin Gai Cu" is: Huang Qi 50–100 grams, Dang Gui 10 grams, Chi Shao 7.5 grams, Di Long 5 grams, Chuan Xiong 7 grams, Tao Ren 5 grams, Hong Hua 5 grams. This formula is still used clinically for stroke. However, after modification, there remain shortcomings. According to Traditional Chinese Medicine, patients with cerebral thrombosis, cerebral infarction, and cerebral vascular spasm fall under the category of stroke affecting the channels and collaterals. The cause of stroke is wind-phlegm invading the meridians leading to blood stasis obstruction. Therefore, further modification was made: Huang Qi 500 grams, Dang Gui 20 grams, Chi Shao 20 grams, Di Long 25 grams, Chuan Xiong 20 grams, Tao Ren 20 grams, Hong Hua 50 grams, Chen Pi 20 grams, Jiang Can 20 grams, Chan Yi 50 grams, Fang Feng 10 grams, Jing Jie 10 grams, Ban Xia 10 grams. After clinical application, results were significantly improved, even without residual symptoms.
The function of Bu Yang Huan Wu Tang is to tonify Qi, activate blood circulation, and unblock meridians. Raw Huang Qi in large doses acts powerfully and circulates throughout the body, greatly replenishing vital Qi and restoring paralysis. Combined with six other herbs that activate blood and remove stasis, the purpose is not merely to expel stasis but to invigorate blood flow through the meridians. Thus, using large-dose Huang Qi as the primary herb aims to use Qi tonification to promote blood circulation and unblock meridians. The second modification added herbs that expel wind and resolve phlegm, resulting in even better outcomes. I share my personal experience with Bu Yang Huan Wu Tang solely to stimulate discussion and inspire medical professionals to develop more excellent remedies for the benefit of patients.
