Murraya exotica L. and the dried leaves and young branches with leaves of Murraya paniculata. Harvestable all year round; remove old branches and dry in shade.
[Appearance] Young branches are cylindrical, 1–5 mm in diameter, gray-brown surface with longitudinal wrinkles. Firm texture, not easily broken; fracture uneven. Pinnate compound leaves with 3–9 leaflets, mostly shed; leaflets oblong or nearly rhomboid, widest above the middle, about 3 cm long and 1.5 cm wide; apex blunt, acute, or indented; base slightly asymmetrical, entire margin; yellow-green, thin leathery texture, transparent glands on upper surface; short petioles or nearly absent; sometimes hairy at base. Fragrant smell, bitter and spicy taste, tingling sensation on the tongue.
Murraya paniculata leaflets are ovate or elliptical, widest at midsection or below, 2–8 cm long and 1–3 cm wide, apex gradually pointed or short-pointed.
[Flavor and Meridian Affinity] Pungent, slightly bitter; warm; mildly toxic.
[Functions and Indications] Regulating Qi to relieve pain, activating blood circulation to dissipate stasis. Used for stomach pain, rheumatic arthralgia; externally applied for toothache, bruises, swelling, and insect or snake bites.
[Dosage and Administration] 6–12 g orally; externally use fresh herb as needed, crush and apply directly to affected area.
[Storage] Keep in a dry place.
