Treatment of Diseases During Pregnancy and Childbirth, Chapter Twenty Master said: When a woman has a normal pulse, with a weak yin pulse, thirst, inability to eat, no chills or fever, this condition is called pregnancy, and should be treated with Guizhi Tang. Formula found in the section on diarrhea. In principle, symptoms should appear around the 60th day; if improperly treated, causing vomiting or diarrhea, then stop treatment. If a woman has a pre-existing condition, and menstruation stops before three months but continuous bleeding occurs, with fetal movement felt above the navel, this is known as a chronic obstruction. Fetal movement at six months indicates that the fetus was present when menstruation was regular earlier; bleeding indicates post-menstrual blood stasis. The reason bleeding continues is because the underlying condition persists, so it must be eliminated using Guizhi Fuling Wan. Guizhi Fuling Wan Formula: Equal parts of Guizhi, Fuling, Danpi (without heart), Shaoyao, and Taoren (skin and tip removed, roasted). Mix the five ingredients into powder, form pills the size of rabbit droppings, take one pill before meals daily. Increase dosage up to three pills if needed. A woman pregnant for six or seven months may have a taut pulse and fever, with increasing fetal swelling and abdominal pain with chills. Her lower abdomen feels like a fan, due to opening of the uterus. This requires warming the organs with Fuzi Tang. Formula not yet seen. Master said: Some women experience continuous bleeding, others have bleeding after miscarriage that does not stop, and some have bleeding during pregnancy. If a pregnant woman has abdominal pain, this is called "fetal obstruction," and should be treated with Jiaoai Tang. Jiaoai Tang Formula: One version adds dry ginger one liang. Hu's method for treating fetal movement lacks dry ginger. Chuanxiong, Ajiao, Gancao each two liang; Aiyeh, Danggui each three liang; Shaoyao four liang; Shudi four liang. Mix the seven ingredients with five sheng of water and three sheng of clear wine, decoct until three sheng remain, remove residue, add ajiao, let dissolve completely, warm and take one sheng three times daily. If ineffective, prepare again. If a pregnant woman has abdominal pain, treat with Danggui Shaoyao San. Danggui Shaoyao San Formula: Danggui three liang; Shaoyao one jin; Chuanxiong half jin (or three liang); Fuling four liang; Ze Xie half jin; Bai Zhu four liang. Mix the six ingredients into powder, take one square measure with wine, three times daily. If nausea and vomiting persist during pregnancy, treat with Ganjiang Renshen Banxia Wan. Ganjiang Renshen Banxia Wan Formula: Ganjiang, Renshen each one and a half liang; Banxia two liang. Grind the three ingredients into powder, mix with fresh ginger juice to form pills the size of paulownia seeds, take ten pills with drink, three times daily. If a pregnant woman has difficulty urinating but appetite remains unchanged, treat with Gui Mu Kusen Wan. Gui Mu Kusen Wan Formula: Gui Mu, Kusen each four liang. Grind the three ingredients into powder, form pills the size of small beans, take three pills with drink, increase to ten pills if needed. If a pregnant woman has fluid retention, body heaviness, difficulty urinating, cold sensitivity, dizziness upon standing, treat with Kuizi Fuling San. Kuizi Fuling San Formula: Kuizi one sheng (some versions say one jin); Fuling three liang. Mix the two ingredients into powder, take one square measure with drink, three times daily, until urination improves. A pregnant woman should usually take Danggui San. Danggui San Formula: Danggui, Huangqin, Shaoyao, Chuanxiong each one jin; Bai Zhu half jin. Mix the five ingredients into powder, take one square measure with wine, twice daily. Regular use during pregnancy makes delivery easier, prevents fetal distress, and treats all postpartum diseases. To nourish the fetus during pregnancy, use Bai Zhu San. Bai Zhu San Formula: Found in *Yitai*. Bai Zhu four fen; Chuanxiong four fen; Shu Jiao three fen (remove sweat); Muli two fen. Mix the four ingredients into powder; take one qian bi with wine, three times daily, once at night. If severe pain, add Shaoyao; if severe heart discomfort, double Chuanxiong; if irritability, vomiting, and inability to eat, add Xi Xin one liang, twenty large Banxia, take after medication, follow with vinegar water. If vomiting persists, continue with vinegar water; if still unresolved, switch to wheat broth. After recovery, if thirsty, take barley porridge. Even after healing, continue taking the medicine. If a woman suffers fetal injury, with abdominal distension during pregnancy, inability to urinate, heaviness below waist resembling fluid retention, and at seven months of pregnancy, if the spleen fails to nourish properly, this indicates excess heart energy. Acupuncture at Laogong and Guanyuan points should be performed. Mild diuresis will lead to recovery.
